A POSSIBLE THREE-PHONON GROUP FROM Ni$sup 6$$sup 2$

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
A model thnt gives a better prediction for the energies of the two- phonon states in nuclei than the simple harmonic oscillator has been proposed by Kerman and Shakin. They have achieved a good fit to the energies of the three twophonon levels of Ni/sup 62/ in terms of two parameters. An experiment is described in which a collective group was found at the energy prechcted by theory for the three-phonon quintet of levels. A Ni/sup 62/ target was bombarded by 43- Mev alpha particles, and a pulse-height spectrum is shown for alpha particles scattered at 38 deg . The three-phonon group energy was computed from the experimental results to be 3.24 plus or minus 0.04 Mev. (H.D.R.)
