The effect of oxalate, citrate, complexone III, fluoride, phosphate, and acidity on the stability of phosphomolybdic, phosphotitanomolybdic, and phosphoniobomolybdic complexes was studied. It was established that a colorless phosphomolybdic reagent with MoO/sub 4/: PO/sub 4/ = 2 at pH 1 quantitatively forms yellow heteropolycomplexes with Ti and Nb. The sensitivity of the reaction is 5 g of Ti or 10 g of Nb in 25 ml of solution. Niobium was determined in the presence of Ti on the basis of more rapid destruction of the phosphotitanomolybdic complex with fluoride followed by the extraction of the remaining phosphoniobomolybdic complex with 1-butanol. It was found that Ta does not give any yellow color with the phosphomolybdic reagent. A method is suggested for the determination of Nb in the presence of Ta. (auth)
