A brief review is given of the apparatus and installations presently in use for the continuous direct measurement of radioactivity on the earth's surface. Monitoring devices used only for dust and aerosol measurements are not considered. The characteristics of installations using G-M tubes, ionization chambers, and scintillation counters as the sensing elements are discussed. (J.S.R.)
