THE UPTAKE, DISTRIBUTION, AND EXCRETION OF FOUR RADIONUCLIDES IN AUSTRALORBIS GLABRATUS (PLANORBIDAE)

Radioisotopes (Sr/sup 85/, Fe/sup 59/, Rb/sup 86/, Na/sup 22/) were incorpora ted into media in which the snail was growing. The uptake, distribution, and degradation of each of the nuclides were studied. The order of uptake, expressed as per cent mean uptake, was Sr> Fe> Rb> Na. The mean per cent uptake for the 4 nuclides at the end of the uptake study was 71% for Sr, 16% for Fe, 4.0% for Rb, and 1.4% for Na. A study of the effect of increasing specific activity on the distribution of each of the 4 nuclides between tissue and shell showed that tissue radioactivities are linear for Sr/sup 85/, Fe/sup 59/ and Rb/ sup 86/ but not for Na/sup 22/. Uptake of the nuclides into dead shells (by passive adsorption) decreased in the order Fe > Na> Rb> Sr. Autoradiography of snails treated with the 4 radionuclides is illustrated. Fe/sup 59/ is localized in specific areas difficult to differentiate anatomically. Na/sup 22/ and Rb/sup 86/ are uniformly distributed in the soft tissue of the snail with little uptake into the shell, The deposition of Sr/sup 85/ in the tissue is generalized while in the shell it is localized almost exclusively in the newly formed portions. The results thus show that appreciable quantities of Sr/sup 85/ and Fe/sup 59/ are concentrated by Australorbis. At day 15 of the uptake study, the radioactivity of snails maintained in water containing Sr/sup 85/ was 700 times that of the water. For Fe/sup 59/ the concentration ratio was 270. The concentration ratios compare favorably with those observed for the marine clam. The application of radioactive tagging to field studies of the ecology and population dynamics of snail intermediate hosts of parasitic diseases is proposed. (TCO)
