The cross section ratio of Cs/sup 134/ and Cs/sup 134m/ was measured for the fission of U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, and U/sup 238/ induced by hel ium ions of 42 Mev and by helium ions of lower energy, for fission of U/sup 235/ induced by deuterons of 21 Mev, and for fission of U/sup 233/ induced by gamma rays with an energy of up to 16 Mev. Comparison of the results with calculations based on a statistical theory of the spin distribution of level densities in excited nuclei shows that in the case of low angular momentum of the fissioning nucleus ( gamma -ray induced fission) the fragments are produced with a mean intrinsic angular momentum that is larger than the angular momentum of the fissioning nucleus. It also shows that increased angular momentum of the fissioning nucleus (helium ion induced fission) is at least partially transferred into additional intrinsic angular momentum of the fragments. Measurements of the angular dependence of the isomer ratio gave for the 170 to 90 deg ratio no significant deviation from isotropy. The half life of Cs/sup 134m/ was remeasured and found to be 2.91 plus or minus 0.02 hr in agreement with earlier results. 27 references. (auth)
