The method described is for controlling automatically the period of nuclear reactors employing a movable nuclear radiation detector. The method comprises the steps of moving the radiation detector with a predetermined velocity along a path, along which the radiation intensity depends exponentially on the space coordinates, and of subtracting the detector signal from an eventually variable reference signal, the resulting difference signal being fed into the driving unit of the control element.
