DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL IN VIVO /cap beta/-RAY DETECTORS AND THEIR DIAGNOSTIC APPLICATIONS. I. SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENT WORK TO DATE. Final Report. II. EVALUATION PROGRAM AT NEUROSURGICAL CENTERS OF BRAIN TUMOR LOCALIZATION UNITS USED AT OPERATION WITH P$sup 32$ Progress Report
A short, 2-mm-diameter, tip-sensitive proportional counter was developed for diagnostic use. Design features and modifications are described. Applications of the counter in the localization of brain tumors and eye lesions after the administration of Hg/sup 203/, Ga/sup 68/, P/sup 32/ or Kr/sup 85/ are reported. A series of dog experiments was carried out in an investigation of diagnostic procedures, using Kr/sup 85/, for the detection of cardiac shunts in infants and children. The experiments with dogs showed the method is not feasible for use in children. Subsequent analysis of the detector requirements and corollary experiments indicated that either a solid-state detector-or an aluminum-walled proportional counter would give better results. (C.H.)
