MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF NIOBIUM-OXYGEN ALLOYS

Journal Article · · J. Less-Common Metals
Niobium with grain size ranging from 0.1 to 2 mm and with dissolved O contents ranging from 500 to 6400 ppm twins at -- 196 deg C on yielding in compression. Twinning did not occur at --196 deg C in sampies not contaminated with O or in any of the samples at --74 deg or at higher temperatures. Deliberate contamination by 0 seemed to promote twinning at --196 deg C. In the temperature range from -- 196 to 100 deg C the effect of grain size on yield strength, either with or without twinning, increased with O content. Larger grained specimens yield at lower stresses than finer grained specimens. At elevated temperaturcs, the greatest influence of O on tensile properties was between 300 and 400 deg C, where it is believed to cause strain-aging. Any effect was lost above about 700 deg C.
