OPTIMUM COBALT CONCENTRATION IN THE STEEL OF PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS

Results of a study to determine the maximum Co concentration that can be tolerated in the stainless steel of pressurized water reactor fuel elements are presented. Active Co is produced by nuclear reactions such as Ni/sup 58/(n,p)Co/ sup 58/ and Co/sup 59/(n, gamma )Co/sup 60/. The optimum Co concentration for a 10% Ni steel was found to be 0.05%. Calculation methods for this and similar determinations are outlined. (J.R.D.) Studies are being made on the operation and limitations of various concepts of rotary shaft sealing for pressurizedwater- reactor applications. The behavior of rotary face seals is being studied by means of an instrumented transparent model that allows direct observation of the fluid in the seal gap during operation. The dual-loop watersupply system was revised to eliminate gas locking, and the construction of the modified system was essentially completed. A graphite stator was fitted with 8 capacitance probes and shakedown runs undertaken to evaluate the operation of the associated electronics that were designed and constructed to permit simultaneous recording on a multichannel oscillograph. Construction of the inverted'' stuffing-box seal experimental apparatus was completed. During the check runs with a single ring of braided, Teflonimpregnated packing, visual observation of the seal interface revealed film rupture at the center of the rubbing area. (M.C.G.)
