The extraction of 24 elements by tri-n-butylphosphine sulfide was investigated. Only two metal ions among those tested extracted well, Ag(I) (D = 825) and Hg(II) (D = 282). Elements that were partially extracted are border region acceptors and included Bi (D = 0.56), Cu(II) (D = 0.026 from 0.1 M HCl), Pb (D = 0.27), and Zn (D = 0.27). It proved difficult to strip Hg(II) from the organic phase with common reagents such as nitric acid, aqua regia, or sodium peroxide. (P.C.H.)
