EFFECTS OF THE EXTRACTION MEDIUM ON THE RECOVERY OF URANYL SULFATE BY MEANS OF TRI-n-OCTYLAMINE

Parameters controlling the extraction of uranyl sulfate from a suifate medium by means of tri-n-octylamine (TOA) were determined. The effect of TOA- concentration with respect to organtc solvent medium, benzene, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride on extraction performance was determined. The concentration of H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ in the aqueous phase was kept constant. As a result, extraction isotherms were S-shaped. The extraction coeificient increased with increased H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, to reach a maximum at 0.05 M. Higher concentrations reduced the extraction. It is postulated that the uranyl sulfate- TOA-complex is displaced from the organic phase by increased H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ concentrations. The extraction coefficient decreased with increased suifate ion concentration. Correlation between the dielectric constant of the solvent and the extraction coefficient was established. Solvents with high dielectric constant reduced the extraction coefficient. However, the chemical nature of the solvent proved to be important. Chloroform, for instance, produced adducts with TOA, probably by hydrogen bonding with the mobiie H of CHCl/sub 3/ and, consequently, extraction of uranyl sulfate was far below 100%. It is suggested that solvents that are compietely inert to amines, but have a low dielectric constant, such as benzene or carbon tetrachloride, be used. (P.C.H.)
