A study was made to determine the effects of radiation on sperm according to whether the sperm complete normal fertilization or act only as ovum activator. Dugesia lugubris populations with one anfimittic diploid biotype and two pseudogamic biotypes were used. The animals were exposed to x rays at doses from 2000 to 5000 r. The results show clearly that the radiation effects are different if the sperm penetrate an anfimittic or pseudogamic egg. In the first case, the sperm can complete a normal fertilization, but the embryonic development is arrested. In the second case there is normal development and birth of living young. (J.S.R.)
