EVOLUTION OF URANIUM DIOXIDE STRUCTURE DURING IRRADIATION OF FUEL RODS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4716725
The characteristic microstructure of UO/sub 2/ observed in irradiated fuel rods is interpreted as resulting from a particular sequence of events. These are: initial melting of the central region; rapid columnar grain formation adjacent to the molten region; subsequent solidification of the core; and upon long exposure, slow continued columnar grain formation. Quantitative analyses of four irradiation test capsules reveal that the observed structure is consistent with this hypothesis. (auth)
