ON THE BREAKAWAY SWELLING IN NUCLEAR FUELS (in French)

Journal Article · · J. Nucl. Energy, Pt. A & B
The possibility of breakaway swelling in nuclear fuels being due to coalescence of fission-gas bubbles is examined. Several possible methods of calculation are given. The results most in accordance with experiment are obtained by considering the bubbles to be distributed randomly in the fuel, to grow by gas absorption proportionally to their surface area, and to merge without an increase of nucleation sites. Curves are given showing the swelling as a function of the irradiation and the distribution of the bubble diameters in the breakaway swelling zone. (auth)
