A remote handling and viewing device is formed by an assembly of an elongated cylindrical television camera suspended on the extremity of its flexibie supplying cable and a mechanicai remote handling device adapted to pickup broken pieces of nuclear fuel elements and mounted on the lower extremity of the camera, this assembiy being adapted to be lowered by the supplying cable into a reactor channel. An electric motor for controlling the remote handling device and for turning the camera around its axis is placed above the camera and is connected via two control shafts disposed beside the camera and parallel to its axis with the remote handling device, one shaft controlling the opening or closing of the gripping means, while the other one controls the orientation of the gripping means.
