The acid strength of sulfated zirconia measured by two {sup 1}H NMR techniques in the presence of water: 4 K broad-line and 300 K high resolution MAS
- Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (France); and others
The interaction of known concentrations of water molecules with sulfated zirconia has been studied by {sup 1}H NMR: broad-line at 4K and MAS at 300 K. The dependence of the ratio of H{sub 3}O{sup +} to SO{sub 4} groups (H{sub 3}O{sup +}/SO{sub 4}) on the ratio of adsorbed H{sub 2}O to SO{sub 4} (ads. H{sub 2}O/SO{sub 4}) has been determined: (H{sub 3}O{sup +}/SO{sub 4}) is equal to 1 when ads. H{sub 2}O/SO{sub 4} = 2. The acidity of the sample is directly comparable to that of H{sub 2}SO{sub 4}, which means that, not being more acidic than H{sub 2}SO{sub 4}, it cannot really be described as a {open_quotes}superacid.{close_quotes} On the basis of the experimental data, the sulfated zirconia sample has been ranked in a previously proposed scale of Bronsted acid strength for solids. 48 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
