FIBRINOLYTIC ACTIVITY IN THE RADIATION SYNDROME IN DOGS (in German)

Ten dogs were submitted to whole-body x irradiation with 600 r at a dose rate of 7 r/min. All dogs died with symptoms of the acute radiation syndrome within 2 weeks. The Lee-White coagulation time began to be prolonged from the 5th to 7th day after irradiation and reached 3- to 6-fold the initial values. An insignificant prolongation of the recalcification time occurred only in the last days before death of the animals, and thrombin time did not change significantly. Fibrinogen level increased up to 3-fold the initial value, and fibrinolysis time in euglobulins was prolonged. The proteolytic activity of the euglobulins, estimated with I/sup 131/-labeled fibrinogen, was decreased. It was shown that the decrease of fibrinolytic and proteolytic activity of the euglobulins was due to an increase of the antiplasmin level. The level of proactivator and plasminogen did not change. It was concluded that the hemorrhagic diathesis accompanying fatal radiation disease in dogs is accompanied by an inhibition rather than an increase in fibrinolysis, and that this results from a rise in serum antiplasmin activity.
