The radiolytic transformations of potassium ferricyanide and ferrocyanide irradiated by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays were studied. In acid solution (pH 0.5) the ferricyanide disappears and ferropentacyanide is formed with a yield that varies between 0.1 and 0.7, when the concentration of the solution increases from 5 x 10/sup -4/ to 2 x 10/sup -2/M. The disappearance yields of the ferricyanide are 2 to 2.5 times higher than the formation of the ferropentacyanide. These yields increase slightly with the pH (up to pH 6). A prolonged irradiation leads to progressive degradation of the solution. Irradiated ferrocyanide is oxidized into ferricyanide that, in its turn, if the irradiation is sufficiently prolonged, undergoes the transformation described above. The oxidation continues for several hours after irradiation. The oxidation yield in concentrated solution (10/sup -2/M) reaches 7 immediately after the irradiation ceases and about 10.5 after the prolonged effect. A qualitative interpretation of the observations described is attempted. (tr-auth)
