RADIATION-INDUCED REACTION OF HEPTANE, NONANE, OR CUMENE WITH CO$sub 2$

The reaction of n-heptane, n-nonane, or cumene with CO/sub 2/ was induced by x and gamma radiation from a Co source in order to study the effect of radiation intensity, temperature, and CO/sub 2/ concentration on the reaction. The reaction was carried out in sealed ampoules. The yield of acids, esters, and carbonyl compounds was found to be independent of gamma intensity in the range from 3.8 x 10/sup 16/ to 1.1 x 10/sup 14/ ev/ml/ sec. The reaction showed no temperature dependence from -77 to +145 deg C. The radiation yield varied as a function of CO/sub 2/ concentration. For CO/sub 2/ concentrations from 6 x 10/ sup -4/ to 8.9 mol/l, the maximum acid yield, 0.9, was at 2 mole/l of CO/sub 2/, and the maximum carbonyl-compound yield, 0.29 molecule/100 ev, at 8.9 mole/l of CO/sub 2/. The carbonyl compounds are assumed to result from the direct effect of radiation on the dissolved CO/sub 2/, which is in good agreement with their linear yield increase with increasing CO/sub 2/ concentiation.
