The maximum thermal load for helium cooled (3 un. Concent 85% K) surfaces was determined, and conditions for preventing helium condensation from emitting too much plasma heat and for retaining a high pumping rate were found. It is shown that nitrogen or water shutters protect helium condensation pumps, and that even double protection does not inhibit the high pumping rate. The tabulated data show that the rate of nitrogen pumping is 1.25 l/sec (hydrogen 4.68 l/sec) per cm/sup 2/ of internal water shutter surface. The prospects for using helium condensation pumps with continuous fluid flow and simultaneous helium vapor pumping seem to be favorable. (R V.J.)
