The spark counter, a precursor of the spark chamber, is described briefly in order to show the evolution of the spark chamber. The actual form of the spark chamber and its associated electrical circuitry are discussed. The principal characteristic s of this detector- high voltage pulse, latency time, sensitivity time, dead time, magnetic field, efficiency, precision, and operational life - are described. Some examples of the application of the spark chamber are given in conclusion. (J.S.R.)
