Vacuum arc melting techniques were developed to produce sound 3 1/2-in. and 4-in. dia. ingots of.W base alloys. The effect of melting rate on ingot characteristics was determined, and the effects of C, O/sub 2/, Zr, and Ti on melting characteristics, ingot structure, extrudability, recrystallization, and high-temperature tensile properties of the W + 0.6 Nb alloy were studied also. Refinement of ingot structure was produced by 0.06 and 0.12% Zr additions and by increasing the melting rate. Coarsening of ingot structure was produced by 0.04% Ti and 500 to 1000 ppm O/sub 2/ addltions. W + 0.6 Nb ingots containing more than 50 ppm C could not be extruded, and correlation between extrudability and C content below 50 ppm was not found. Adding 0.12% Zr to the W + 0.6 Nb alloy significantly improved the 3000 un. Concent 85% F tensile properties. (auth)
