EVIDENCE FOR AN EXCITED STATE OF THE ALPHA PARTICLE FROM d + t NEUTRON SPECTRA

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
Neutron spectra from d + t interactions were observed at deuteron energies from about 5 to 12 Mev at laboratory angles from 0 to 70 deg , and a typical angular distribution of th spectrum is given for a deuteron energy near 8 Mev. To investigate the way in which the observed high-energy peak arises, Q- values for T(d,n)He/sup 4/* reactions were calculated, The average value corresponds to an excitation energy in the alpha particle of 20.1 Mev, and the width of the peak falls between 300 and 400 kev.
