ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC FRACTOGRAPHY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4713465
Electron microscopic fractography comprises the examination of replicas of fracture surfaces under the electron microscope and is a valuable tool for studying the fracture micromechanism and for analyzing service failures. The techniques of fractography are described, and the direct carbon and plastic- carbon methods of replication are compared. The characteristic appearances of various types of fractures under the electron microscope are described for overload fractures, fatigue fractures, and intergranular fractures. Possible areas for future research are discussed briefly. (D.L.C.)
