A Be/sup 9/ target having a thickness of 8 mg cm/sup -2/ was bombarded with 13.6-Mev deuteron beam from a cyclotron at the Ukrainian Institute of Physics. A fast coincidence circuit with a resolving time of 2 GAMMA = 6 x 10/ sup -9/ sec was used to measure the p- gamma coincidences from the Be/sup 9/ (d,p)Be/sup 10*/ reaction. The resolving time for the slow coincidence circuit was 10/sup -6/ sec. The proton spectrometer (a 2 x 10 mm NaI crystal) was piaced at an angle of 15 un. Concent 85% with respect to the direction of the deuteron beam. The angular correlation between the protons and gamma rays is given by the following expression: W( ) = 1 - (0.38 450 deg C in a 0.04) P/sub 2/ (cos ), where is the angle between the gamma -counter and the direction of recoil. The ground state of Be/sup 9/ has a spin of 3/2, and a negative parity. The first excited state of Be/sup 10/(2/sup +/) is formed during neutron capture with 1/sub n/ = 1, and decays to a ground state O/sup +/ by way of a pure E/sub 2/ gamma transition. An analysis of the p- gamma correlation, with the assumption of L-S binding, gives a mixture of about 90% of spin 2 and 10% of spin 1 for the spin input channel. (TTT)
