An improved high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is designed. The gas coolant is circulated upwardly along the side wall of the pressure vessel, downwardly through the core, and then out of the vessel. The fuel elements are provided with impervious graphite cladding, and a fission product trapping system is provided in the cooling circuit. (D.L.C.)
