DETERMINATION OF THE BUILDUP FACTOR FOR BARRIER GEOMETRY (in Russian)

Tabulations of numerical values of the coefficients appearing in the formula which determine the buildup factor, while taking into account the effect of multiple scattering, are available for various gamma -energy levels and for several different shielding materials. The formulas refer to ideal cases, but in actual calculations instead of infinite media shielding barriers of a finite thickness must be used. This makes it necessary to make use of a correction factor when recalculating ihe numerical values derived for an infinite medium. Attempts to express this factor as a sum of two exponents did not yield satisfactory results. The ratio of the buildup factors for barrier geometry and for an infinite medium were assumed to be constant, without reducing the precision of the calculations. It was thus possible to use the buildup factor calculated for infinite medium for calculating the dose from large sources placed behind a shield. The values of these coefficients for water and iron are presented in a tabular form; they may be used advantageously for calculations involving isotopic point sources. (TTT)
