An apparatus is designed for equalizing the pressures in separate coolant and moderator circuits in a heterogeneous reactor, without admixture of coolant and liquid moderator. The apparatus comprises an arrangement of pipes and vessels defining a number of zones which contain a buffer liquid and a protective gas. The buffer liquid is in contact with coolant in one zone and with protective gas in a second zone, and the protective gas is also in contact with liquid moderator in a third zone. (D.L.C.)
