ANGULAR-MOMENTUM EFFECTS ON NEUTRON EMISSION BY Dy$sup 156$, Tb$sup 153$, AND Tb$sup 157$ COMPOUND NUCLEI

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4712831
The following reactions were studied. Pr/sup 141/(C/sup 12/,4n)Tb/sup 149g/; Nd/sup 146/(B/sup 11,8n)Tb/sup 149/; Nd/sup 144/(C/sup 12/,5n)Dy/sup 151/; Nd/su p 144/(C/sup 12/, 6n)/Dy/sup 150/; 151/; Ce/sup 140/(O/sup 16/,6n)Dy/sup 150/; and eactions, which directly produce the low-spin state of Tb/sup 149/, probably arise from compound nuclei of low angular momentum. The last six reactions have very different properties from the first two. These differences are attributed to differences in the angular momenta of the initial compound nuclei that give rise to these reactions. Excitation functions were measured or are available for all the reactions. Range distributions for the final nuclei are reported for the last six reactions. These range data give strong evidence for compound-nucleus formation. Angular distributions of the final nuclei for all the reactions are reported. From the angular distribution data the average energies of emitted photons and neutrons for each reaction are deduced. In the first two reactions the average total photon energy is less than 10 Mev. In the last six reactions the average total photon energy varies from approximately l to more than 30 Mev. (auth)
