Title: PROCESS FOR IRRADIATING HIGH HYDROCARBON COATINGS ON METAL TO FORM POLYMERIC COATINGS AND RESULTANT ARTICLE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4712502

A process for producing polymerized chemical coatings on metals is patented. A nonvolatile, low-melting-point organic substance, such as a heavy oil, wax, fatty acid, or asphalt is extended in the form of a film on the surface of an oxidizable metal. The film is exposed to ionizing radiation in the energy range of approximates 1 to 600 kv from a low-voltage electron accelerator. The intensity of radiation should be at least 10 kwh/lb of product. This converts the film to a hard, relatively infusible plastic film tenaciously bound to the metal surface. Details of the process and specific examples are presented. (M.P.G.)
