S>The composition and instability constants for Pa(V), Np(V), and Pu(V) are listed for EDTA and citric, oxalic, phosphoric, trihydroxyglutaric, alpha - hydroxybutyric, tartaric, malic, mandelic, acetic, and lactic acids. Pa, Np, and Pu form complexes of the same composition, and of about the same strength. The pentavalent actinides do not tend to complex readily, and they differ only slightly in complexing ability between themselves. Thus, Pu(V) forms complexes less readily than Pu(IV) or Pu(VI). The strength of the complexes with various addends can be listed in the following order: EDTA> citric> oxalic> phosphoric> trihydroxyglutaric> alpha -hydroxyisobutyric > tartaric> malic> mandelic> acetic> lactic. The strength and composition of various U(V) complexes can be derived from a plot of pK/sub H/ versus atomic number. The values of pK/sub H/ for U(V) complexes with a ratio of metal to addend of 1: 1 are 3.2 for the oxalate, 9.7 for the EDTA, 2.4 for the tatrate, 2.6 for the lactate, and 4.0 for the citrate complex. These data indicate the similarity in behavior of pentavalent protoactinium, neptunium, and plutonium. (TTT)
