Title: Determination of Sulfate with Chromium-51

A procedure was developed for the determination of sulfate with Cr51. The method involves the reaction in which the sulfate is precipitated with an excess of a HCl solution of BaCrO4. After neutralization of the solution with ammonia, the insoluble BaSO4 and excess BaCrO/sub 4/ are filtered off and the soluble chromate, equivalent to the sulfate originally present, is determined by redox titration. The excess is measured by first adding Cr51 trace to the BaCrO4 solution and then measuring the activity of the excess chromate. With the use of Cr51, the determination can be performed in the presence of substances that interfere with the normal redox titration procedure.
