Derivation of the Nordheim Equation from the Diffusion Equation; DERIVATION DE L'EQUATION DE NORDHEIM A PARTIR DE L'EQUATION DE DIFFUSION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4712033
The Nordheim equation is deduced by basing the derivation only on the eqaation for the scattering of thermal neutrons by a multiplying medium. This is done by adding to the diffusion equation a source term that expresses conveniently the contribution of m different groups of delayed neutrons to the neutron balance of the medium. The consideration of a single differential equation in order to obtain the Nordheim equation evidently constitutes an important simplicity with respect to the method applied up to the present. This method consisted of using simultaneously the diffusion equation for thermal neutrons and of m coupled equations giving the densities of nuclei-mothers, fission products emitting delayed neutrons.
