THE ANALYSIS OF FRACTURE SURFACES BY ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4711981
The different observations made on the fracture surfaces of steels and aluminum alloys resulting from brittle, ductile, fatigue, and intergranular fractures are reviewed and illustrated. The investigation of the intergranular fracture of A.I.S.I. 4340 steel parts during service is described and the causes of fracture are discussed. Suggestions are made for the use and development of the techniques and findings of electron microfractography in the investigation of the causes of service failures. (auth)
