In order to close an access channel of a reactor pressure vessel in a tight manner and to place a shielding plug therein, coupling means are provided to lock a sleeve into the top piece of the vertical access channel. This sleeve supports at its lower end the shielding plug. The sleeve is adapted to slide with piston rings in a boring of the top piece and is provided with locking elements which are adapted to move in directions having radial components in order to engage into cavities provided in the boring of the top piece. After placing the sleeve, some of the locking elements are brought into locking position by wedge-shaped push rods mutually connected via a ring shaped member sliding on the body of the sleeve. In case the pressure in the vessel increases, the sleeve pushes via a conical shoulder on the locking elements which are suitably constituted of steel ball in order to bring them into locking position, so that it is impossible to unlock the sleeve as long as the vessel is under pressure.
