FLOODING DEVICE FOR THE SAFETY VESSEL OF A NUCLEAR REACTOR ABOARD A SHIP
The flooding device described for the safety vessel of a nuclear reactor aboard a ship contains flooding valves which are opened automatically at a predetermined pressure difference between the exterior of the ship, e.g., the surrounding sea water, and the inside of thc safety vessel and are closed again after pressure equilibrium is attained. As the nuclear reactor is provided with a separate decay heat removal system which comprises a heat exchanger within the safety vessel and conduits for ventilating air from outside the ship through the heat exchanger, it is proposed to locate the flooding valves within thc safety vessel in the walls of the conduits. Upon occurrence of damage to the ship, the conduits would facilitate the flooding of the safety vessel. As it is possible to locate the flooding valves both before and after the heat exchanger, only the flow resistance of conventional conduit elements must be considered. (Gmelin Inst.)
