This paper reviews the experience of using NBIC rules in the petroleum industry and compares the 1989 NBIC with the 1995 NBIC. Repair welding of pressure vessels typically occurs for carbon steels (P-1), carbon-{1/2}Mo steels (P-3), 1(1/4)Cr-{1/2}Mo steels (P-4), and 2{1/4}Cr-1Mo steels (P-5A), but the more common repairs are on the lower alloy P-1 and P-3 vessels. In the petroleum industry, repairs on these vessels require a postweld heat treatment (PWHT) because of ASME VIII thickness limitations or to lower the hardness to prevent hydrogen cracking during operation.
