The theoretical and practical requirements of power reactor fuels are reviewed critically. The factors considered include the nuclear properties necessary for a sustained chain reaction, such as the concentration of fissionable and neutron-absorbing elements in the material, the heat-transfer parameters, including heat conductivity and refractoriness, chemical stability and corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, and radiation resistance. The currently used or proposed fuels are resed only in experimental reactors, they are considered to be quite attractive because they allow high burnup, continuous elimination of fission products poisoning the system, and uninterrupted replenishment while acting simultaneously as the heat transfer agent; however, many technical problems remain yet to be solved. The solid fuels, including the pure metals, alloys, oxides, and dispersed cermet-rties of 21 reactor fuels are tabulated. It is pointed out that in view of the considerable amount of work currently in progress, it is not possible to predict what type of material will be ultimaiely adopted. The increased use of refractory materials becomes more and more pronounced. Complete burnup cycles are usually considered. (TTT)
