MARTENSITE TRANSFORMATIONS IN ZIRCONIUM, TITANIUM, AND TITANIUM-COPPER ALLOYS

Journal Article · · Trans. AIME
OSTI ID:4711535

Titanium, Zr, and Ti--Cu alloys were prepared by levitation melting under Ar in the compositions 0.5, 1.0, formation was the effect of surface rumpling. Previously polished samples that showed a rumpled surface after transformation were assumed to have undergone martensitic transformation; transformations of a diffusion type produce no surface disturbance. For all metals and alloys a gradual depression of transformation temperature with increasing cooling rate was recorded, to the critical cooling rate. At and above this rate, the transformation temperature was constant. An 8% Cu alloy showed no signs of martensitic transformation. Twins were observed in polished and martensitically transformed Ti and Ti-- Cu samples. (P.C.H.)
