THE THALLIUM-INDIUM PHASE DIAGRAM AS A FUNCTION OF COMPOSITION, TEMPERATURE, AND PRESSURE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4711531
The Tl-rich region of the Tl-In phase diagram was determined from atmospheric pressure to 5.5 kbars primarily from electric resistivity data obtained as a function of composition, temperature, and pressure. Corroborative x-ray diffraction data were taken at atmospheric pressure. Extrapolation of the results to high pressures indicates that a triple point occurs among three solid allotropes of Tl at 162 l C and 35.8 kbars. The high pressure phase was found to be continuous with the fcc phase observed at atmospheric pressure for Tl containing 40 to 77 at.% In. This indicates that the crystal structure of the high pressure allotrope of Tl is fcc. The remaining two phases in equiiibrium at the triple point are continuous with the hcp low temperature phase and the bcc high-temperature phase observed for pure Tl at atmospheric pressure. A revised phase diagram for the Tl-In system at atmospheric pressure is also proposed. (auth)
