DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TYPE OF FAST NEUTRON SPECTROMETER (in French)
>A fast neutron spectrometer, composed of a central scintillator and an annular scintillator, is described. The successive scattering of an incident neutron in the central scintillator and then in the annular scintillator defines a quasi-central recoil of the deuteron, and this deuteron energy is then used to measure the energy of the incident neutron with which it is in unequivocal relation. The physical and electronic principle of the spectrometer is given. Neutrons from the D-D and D-T reactions were used to calibrate the instrument. Curves obtained on N/sup 14/(d,n) and Li/sup 7/(d,n) reactions show the efficiency. A tabulation is given of the characteristics of different fast neutron spectrometers and indicates that the present apparatus is usable at high energies (6 to 20 Mev). (J.S.R.)
