Sea ice observations should be useful for the early detection of global climate change. The most direct, consistent sources of repetitive information on the polar ice covers are satellite passive microwave data. Recent research using Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) 1978--1987 and Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) 1987--1994 data has detected statistically-significant negative trends in Arctic sea ice extent and ice areas, and there are less-certain signs that the Antarctic ice extent is decreasing slightly. The changes are not expected to be uniform; however, neither the spatial nor temporal aspects are known. The authors investigate the temporal aspects and their implications for climate change. The data set consists of 1978-1994 time series of ice extent, ice area, water area and spatially-averaged ice concentration for the Arctic and Antarctic, derived from a merged SMMR and SSM/I data set. Here, the authors estimate the monthly and seasonal trends and their statistical significance, revealing the relative contributions of the particular seasons and months to the overall variability and trends.
