AUTOMATED SMEAR PROGRAM FOR RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4710212
BS>An automated system was devised for taking smear samples in a uranium production facility. The program consists of the following major steps: the taking of smears on standard IBM cards by a specially designed device which standardizes methods of obtaining a sample; counting and recording results from the cards automatically; and automatic tabulation of results for expeditious reporting. The program offers several advantages such as: removing the human element in taking smear samples, since the device used controls smear pressure and surface area samples; providing automatic sample counting and data machine tabulation for fast reporting, as compared to hand counting and data tabulations; and offering the capability of processing 15,000 samples per month at a minimum operating cost with minimum human effort.
