A SIMPLE OPTICAL SYSTEM FOR USING STANDARD MAGNETS WITH SPARK CHAMBERS

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instr. Methods
A method is described for making use of a generally available standard bending magnet with a spark chamber without wasting much of the useful magnetic volume in the effort to provide stereoscopic viewing of the chamber. An optical system was designed, which consists essentially of replacing a plane mirror that would occupy a very large volume with a pair of effective echelon mirrors that occupy appreciably less volume. A diagram of the arrangement is shown. Tests to date were satisfactory. The cost was little more than the initial magnet cost. (A.G.W.)
