Title: REMOVAL OF Sr-90 ON NIIGATA MONT-MORILLONITE CLAY BY COLUMN TECHNIQUE (in Japanese)

Natural clay in rods of 1 mm dia x 2-5 mm was prepared from a predominantly Ca saturated montmorillonite, a commercial bleaching earth from Omi, Niigata prefecture, by mixing with polyvinyl acetate as a binder and drying the resulting paste in rods at 110 deg C. Portions of the natural clay in rods were converted to Na and H forms by treating with 1N solutions of the corresponding chloride, and the clays were washed with distilled water and dried at 110 deg C before using for Sr/sup 90/ removal. Through a column (20 mm dia) containing 20 g of clay in rods, each of the solutions containing Sr/sup 90/ was percolated at a flow rate of 10 mi/min at room temperature. Effects of Na and Ca ions on the efficiency of Na clay for Sr/sup 90/ removal from pH 6.5 solution containing 10/sup -2/ mu C/ml Sr/sup 90/ are expressed by experimental equations. 7 pH range of 6.4 to 9.2 was found to be preferable for Sr/sup 90/ removal on Na clay. The decontamination factor for Sr/sup 90/ by Na clay decreased with increasing strontium concentration. In the presence of 5 x 10/sup -3/N CaCl/sub 2/ at pH 6.4, values of the factor were more than 100 for 3.5 x 10/sup -2/ mu C/ ml Sr/sup 90/, and approximates 30 for 5 ppm carrier traced with 3.2 x 10/sup -2/ mu C/ml Sr/sup 90/. Na clay was found to be incomparably superior in efficiency of Sr/sup 90/ removal to two clays, natural clay and H clay. (A.G.W.)
