A SURVEY ON DEPTH DOSE DISTRIBUTIONS OF TELEISOTOPE RADIATION THERAPY

The study group on Measurements of Depth Dose Distributions for High Energy Radiation Beam'' has planned to standardize depth dose data of the teiecobalt and telecesium therapy in Japan. Depth dose data on five telecobalt fixed field units, one telecesium fixed field unit, three telecobalt rotational units, and one telecesium rotational unit were offered from the fourteen institutions with hospital physicists. In telecobalt therapy, 60 isodose charts for normal incident fixed field and a few charts of oblique, wedge, and spiit fields were discussed. It was found that the central axis percentage depth dose for the same field size measured in different tnstitutions agreed within about 3% of the local dose in the case of the medium and long sourcesurface distances. In the short-surface distance, however, considerable discrepancies between the local doses were observed. There were only four isodose charts in the telecesium therapy. There were 34 isodose charts for the constant source-tumor distance, where the dose at the depth of 15 cm was expressed as 100%, and it is found that they were very convenient in the fixed-field therapy using rotational units. In the rotationai therapy, it was difficult to standardize isodose distributions from the experimental data in various units, since the differences of penumbra had a considerable effect upon the depth dose distributions.
