Investigations of the discharge mechanism in moist air at atmospheric pressure (10 Torr water vapor) in homogeneous fields at e1ectrode gaps of 7 to 30 cm were carried out. Pulse voltages with amplitudes from about 200 up to 1,000 kv (rise time of 0.8 mu sec and falltime of 3 msec) were produced with a Marx pulse generator. The voltage amplitudes and formation time were measured with a twostage capacitive voltage divider with a Tektrorix oscillograph. The relative accuracy obtained for the voltage measurements was plus or minus 10/sup -3/ and the absolute error was plus or minus 1.5 x 10/sup -2/. The formation times were measured with an accuracy of plus or minus 5%. The temperature and humidity were maintained at constant values. The breakdown voltage was measured on a spark gap (total diameter 150 cm, diameter of the plain part 50 cm, and plane copper electrodes with Rogowski profile) in the gap range from 7 to 30 cm. A comparison with the measurements of other authors, which were carried out up to 16 cm, shows agreement within the measurement accuracy. Up to 10 cm electrode gap the breakdown field strength remains almost constant (25.5 kv/cm). Formation times were measured as a function of the overvo1tage. The times found indicate that in the vicinity of the static voltage, the discharge proceeds by a mechanism similar to the modified channel formation. At overvoltages of 2 to 3% the formation time declines so much that the discharge can be explained as single avalanche formation. At gaps over 10 cm weak dependence of the formation time on the gaps was observed. (tr-auth)
