IV. Comparisons of the Effects of X Rays and Cyclotron Neutrons on Mouse Ascites Tumours, Mouse Testis and Chick Embryos
The biological effectiveness of cyclotron neutrons as compared with x irradiations was studied: oxygen enhancement ratios for fast neutrons and x rays were compared using survival of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells as a basis for judging the likelihood of improvements in the treatment of partially anoxic tumors; RBEs for different types of damage in different tissues and organs were measured in order to see whether they fell into a narrow range, which could be considered to be typical of the neutron beam, or whether the values differed for different biological end points; and some data were derived on the effects of fractionation. The oxygen enhancement ratio for killing ascites tumor cells was 1.9 with neutrons, whereas the ratio with 200-kv x rays was 3.1. The effectiveness of 250-kv x rays relative to 8mv x rays was 1.2 for the killing of chick embryos. The effects of fractionated radiation doses are also discussed. (P.C.H.)
