The solid state polymerization of 3-fluoromethyl-3ethyloxetane (FEO) and of 3-chloromethyl-3-ethyloxetane (CEO) and the solid state copolymerication of FEO and CEO are investigated. FEO and CEO show very similar polymerization behaviors, though the polymerization rate of FEO is much slower than that of CEO. Initial polymerization rate, saturatad polymer yield, and molecular weight of the obtained polymer are greater for slowly crystallized samples than for rapidiy crystallized ones. The polymerization rate and molecular weight of polymer were found to have a maximum value at an irradiation temperature about 20 deg C lower than the melting point of each monomer. These observations indicate and the crystal condition of the monomer affects the solid state polymerization. From the observation of phase diagrams, mixtures of FEO, and CEO were found to be solid solutions at temperatures below the melting point over all compositions. Copolymers obtained by the irradiation of these solid solutions are of the same composition as the initial monomer mixtures. Properties of polymers were investigated. From x-ray-diffraction analyses, FEO, CEO, and copolymer have all very high crystallinity. Melting points of FEO and CEO are 129 and 105 deg C respectively, and copolymers also have sharp melting points. (A.G.W.)
