RADIATION PNEUMONIA

Journal Article · · Exptl. Med. Surg.
OSTI ID:4708879
Two cases of radioinduced pneumonia, which occurred in women undergoing x-ray therapy for breast cancer, are described. The daily thoracic dose of 190- kv x rays was 2l0 r in both cases and the total doses were 2100 r in one case and 3350 r in the other. Symptoms of the developing radiation pneumonia simulated those of tuberculosis, including chest pains, dyspnea, and cough. Moreover, chest roentgenograms showed nodular infiltrations throughout both lungs, which were initially thought to represent tubercles. Fever was present in both patients and one patient developed pericardial effusion, possibly also attributable to irradiation. In 3 to 4 months, during which antibiotic and prednisone therapy was instituted, the pulmonary lesions cleared, apparently without development of fibrosis. (H.H.D.)
